All gussied up

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

I had to wax a couple cheeses last night and decided I was done using torn-up corners of notepad paper as labels. As classy as that looks, maybe it’s time to get a little fancier and, you know, maybe actually print something out. There, that’s better.

Dressing the cake

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Whoops! I just realized that I showed y’all the finished Project Wedding Cake without any of the buildup and the fancy-fication. There are several steps from fresh-baked layers to that neat and tidy finished product. Since I am in no way, shape or form ever going to be an expert on this, and besides Deb […]

Pardon the wittering

… but as this homesteading business is so arduous, I’ll likely be posting lots of these little entries. You know, to keep track of the baby steps, for when I write the big book. -wink- Today I: sowed 1000 sf of rye grass spread 5000 sf of calcium (to sweeten the soil) raked smooth (more […]

Before and after (quite roughly). I’ve gotten the calcium distributed and the rye sown; in the process I stumbled into a knee-high puddle and nearly got both shoes stuck. I’ve got new pink galoshes and my wheelbarrow’s loaded to go out again and rake before sowing some cover crop peas. Anyone got any pussy willow […]

Another project added

Yippee, we got the site running again, so I can tell you about what we scored on Freecycle last week! A dining room table. Finally! We’ve been living with the same wobbly IKEA breakfast table (barely seats four, uncomfortably) for nearly seven years now. (Or eight? How long have I been married, again?) We’ve wanted […]

Well, I have all kinds of posts for you guys, replete with pictures and all, but…. SOMEONE in our family forgot to renew our domain name or host or some technical nonsense like that. Long story short, no access to the gallery, so no access to pictures, so no blog posts till probably Tuesday. If […]

This may take a while.

So the land was cleared Monday, and now commences the clean-up. I just got in from trying to rake the raw, sodden mess that is my back yard into some kind of shape. Oh. My. Gosh. The contractors and their machines left it so ugly. The soil is churned up in ridges, compacted down along […]

Aaaand… we’re done!

Two tiers, five layers of buttermilk-peach cake with brown-sugar cream-cheese icing, drizzled with ginger syrup and stuffed with peach-meyer-lemon curd between every delicious layer. Topped with a sprinkling of crystallized ginger. Someone at the wedding asked me if it was a health cake, because it had peaches in it. As if! I burst out laughing […]

5 of 5 and good so far

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

The cake, it has been baked. Sifting. Fancy. And I got to use my homemade organic buttermilk, too. Almost the whole quart I made fresh yesterday. I love how I don’t have to buy that stuff any more. I made a double batch and it just baaaarely fit into my big mixer. It turned out […]

More thoughts on the wedding cake – first off I’ve got to decide what to make. The couple asked for the peach cake with the brown-sugar cream-cheese icing. That’s a fairly straightforward cake; I could just make it several layers high. It’s a simple, light, summery cake that could probably hold its own just like […]
