Olly olly oxen (chickens?) free!!!

I heard back from the permit lady today – we’re good to go! They decided (as she said she thought they would) to only fine the contractor. I think that’s perfectly justified.

In the mean time I can continue to garden and I just need to fill out a standard grading plan application. No citations for me, just a little bit of PITA finding a plat map and drawing a scaled plan of the area we cleared, making copies, mailing them to various offices, etc. Sounds fine to me – I’d rather do that than pay $500!

In other happy permit news:

1) I also found out that any structure less than 64sf does not require a building permit (as long as it’s less than 6′ tall), so that’s why the permit lady didn’t say anything about the chicken coop after she eyed it a bit. Man, I was getting really nervous about getting not one, but two permit violations!

2) I found out that I will need a permit in order to put up my deer fence, even though it’s just posts and netting, because it has to be 8′ tall. I will also need a permit to install simple pergolas (like an arbor, but over a path not a patio) over a couple of the entrances. I suppose I can combine the two and get permission for them on the same permit, now, if they form part of the fence. I’m glad I found out before I started work, because that’s definitely something I would not have thought to get a permit for.

I had in mind something along these lines for the entrances (my design would include deer-proof gates):

Eventually they would be just smothered in climbing roses, and won’t that make entering the garden such a pleasure?

Blocked for one day and up and running full-tilt with more plans within 24 hours – I even exhaust myself sometimes. But there’s always something that needs to be done! (I think perhaps my New Year’s Resolution should be to schedule in time for relaxing and doing nothing. Is it still dolce far niente if it has to be studied?)

so glad all’s well that ends well…and the contractor sounds as if he deserved it.
like the “gate” ideas. maybe make the gate part higher to keep deer out or make it short and add chickenwire or something that doesn’t interfere with the view through the gate to the top.
do you have a topographical map of your area? may make the site map easier to do.

    Yay! Permit hooray!

Have you thought about totally going all Secret Garden out there?

Um… if you mean crazy tangled jungle of flowering and flourishing vegetation, then of course! :)

If you mean an 8′ tall fence, well, no. It’d block sun and probably antagonize the neighbors too (their house is only like 10′ away from our southernmost border). We might consider it in the future though, since I wouldn’t mind a little additional privacy. In the mean time, it’s just see-through deer netting for me! Fencing is ex-pen-sive! (Especially nearly 400 feet of it!)
