Potential

Much to the delight of the evil taskmistress and the guilt of the good hostess in me, Josh’s parents have been spending their vacation slaving away helping me set up the farm. Yesterday we laid the paths completing the Nautilus section of the farm beds and used up every single last chip of mulch doing it.

The idea behind the spiral is an attempt to integrate natural shapes into the garden; it’s a permaculture theory promoted in, I think, Gaia’s Garden.

I am not tapering the bed width as it spirals in (since supposedly 5′ wide is optimal), so it looks more like a regular spiral than a nautilus; but “the nautilus garden” sounds so nice, doesn’t it?

I have to say I’m not really a fan of geometric garden plans. If it were up to me, all the paths would be completely random and wind all over the place – but I do need to consider ease of wheelbarrow and weeding access, and the fact that for ease of planting, no bed should be wider than 5′. A spiral lets me have an interesting curve while still satisfying the need for evenly sized 5×20′ beds. And if I stand in the center I can reach every one with equal ease.

While the smaller, winding paths may be a bit less convenient for a wheelbarrow – we’ll have to see – I have high hopes and I just can’t wait to see all the beds planted.

Totally stealing your idea if I ever have a place to do it in! Looks gorgeous!

It all looks really nice! Whatever happened with your ordeal with the wetlands and the trees?

Oh didn’t I say? They made me fill out, retrospectively, a standard grading sheet. Then they fined the contractor (and him alone!) We’re Sooooo relieved.
