Bridal gown redo – part 5

See part 4 here.

The bridal dress redo is chugging along, and I have high hopes and crossed fingers that it will all be finished by Halloween Sunday!

I spent the last two days draping and pinning the overskirt to its waistband.

See how many pins? And that’s just half the waistband you see there.

When I tacked it up to check the drape (one of the good things about having a dummy handy) I noticed some peek-a-boo going on down at the hem. Drat. I had to take it all apart and do it over.

But I did get the length right in the end.

The lining is showing here – I did elect to fully line the overskirt, and it makes it feel so rich and luscious – and that will be fixed as one of the finishing touches.

I stopped to try and figure out how many hours I’ve spent on this dress already, and it boggled my mind to realize that it has already added up to around 100 hours (counting the evenings I spent papier-macheing the inside of the dummy). Despite my thinking that each step of the process seems fairly simple after it’s all been broken down, it all takes time and an enormous amount of patience. I realized the overskirt alone has already taken me 8 hours.

The funny thing to me is that I had no idea. That’s how much I love making Ren Faire costumes, and sewing for friends.

Oh it looks so luxurious–like something you’d never want to take off! (Or could wear multiple years.) I WANT ONE!!!!!!!

I love the pintuck pattern–can you teach me how to do that?

I didn’t do the little gathers, the fabric came that way. It looks awfully easy (it’s a cloverleaf pattern done with elastic thread), but it would have been tedious as all get-out. It makes the fabric look so rich, doesn’t it?
