SofĂa’s really starting to get pretend-play now. She used to just make up her own nonsensical games, but now she’s actually pretending to be something. Case in point – we saw Astroboy once or twice and for the last few weeks, she’s been a non-stop flying robot. (Her absolute favorite thing to be is a flying superhero from the Incredibles, but that’s another blog post.)

Well, we just got Toy Story in the mail and now all she wants to be is a cowboy or an astronaut. As soon as it was over she came running into the kitchen, begging “Mommy! Mommy! Make me a cowboy hat and vest and astronaut hat and wings and boots!” Well, I think a Buzz Lightyear costume is a bit beyond my skills, but a cowboy vest I can do. So off we went to Hobby Lobby.

She picked out the fabrics, and cowboys must be in this year because there were about 10 cowboy patterns to choose from. Fabric was 50% off too, so that was nice.

(Have I mentioned how endearing it is that her first request whenever she wants something is always “Mommy! Make me one!” She has such faith in my ability to make absolutely anything. And also I’m pleased that she’s not shouting “Mommy! Buy me one!” instead. My ego and wallet both thank her.)

Once back home, I had her lie down on the cow fabric while I traced her with a fabric marking pen. She was so eager and excited but kept quite still – I think she’s starting to understand goals.

I folded and stacked the fabrics and cut both colors at once.

We sat together with her on my lap while I sewed. She’s getting very curious about everything and seems unable to restrain herself from touching (plus it was near naptime) so that was more frustrating than it needed to be. But it still took very little time. Soon we had us a cowgirl vest!

This was such a quick and rewarding little project, I’m thinking about selling some on Etsy. If anyone wants one, let me know.

She won’t take it off! She kept showing it off to a friend that stopped by yesterday, and this morning the first thing she said – before “good morning” – was “Mommy, get me some socks so that I can wear my cow vest!” And she insisted on wearing it to Costco today (where she spilled tomato soup on it and nearly cried. I got it clean and all is well).

I think mine’s way cuter. :)

Now to find a hat and boots.

that little cowgirl of yours is definitely cuter than any cowboy I’ve ever seen!!

It is so nice that you can do something like that so quickly and cheaply.

I’ve been looking at a lot of your posts lately and I am really impressed! My 4-year-old daughter saw this picture and wanted to know who it was. I said it was her cousin, Sophia. She said she wanted to come and play with her. :) If we only lived closer I’m sure they could have a great time. Flying over from Germany is out of the question though! Where do you guys live?

We live near Baltimore. We’d love to see you guys!
