Manly men get pie

Josh had been promising me a weekend of woodsplitting for a while now. We’ve been talking about how all that wood from the land clearing is going to get rotten and useless if we don’t split it, stack it, and cover it. It’s been so wonderful to have our electricity bill nearly sliced in half, and I’d love to have free wood next year too; those logs are like money just sitting there. And I hate to see good things go to waste.

Well, yesterday he delivered. Oh, boy did he deliver.

I came out to help him for about an hour (until Sofía got tired of playing by herself in the sandbox and I had to entertain her inside). It was a lot of fun to work together – I wish we could do it more often. Afterwards, I could barely lift my arms. But Josh worked out there for hours with an ax and a sledgehammer + wedges.

He made a visible dent in the ginormous pile we still have left from the land clearing. Then our neighbor came over and pointed out something that makes it seem like renting a hydraulic log splitter might be possible after all (that our truck already is set up for towing, and we can just rent a hitch ball, which means we wouldn’t have to pay the $100-each-way delivery fee, which knocks a good $200 off the rental price). I think we’ll use some of the money my parents gifted us and just make that happen.

Even then, he kept on working, splitting some of the log chunks into finer pieces for the wood stove.

He deserved a good thank you.

So I made him pie.

There’s just something about when he gets out there and does hard work that makes me want to make him pie. Call me old-fashioned – but I show my love through food. And everybody loves pie.

Mmmm pie. It really came out especially good this time, too.

I guess I kind of made two pies really.

An apple crumble made with this year’s orchard-picked Jonathans and a layer of cognac-vanilla pears from the pear foraging. The top layer is pecans, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter.

We all ate until we popped.

Anyone else wanna come over and help us split some more? 😀
