They’re baaaaack!

Earthworms! I have earthworms!

I made this exciting discovery as I was planting my potatoes last week.

Every shovelful turned up one or two wrigglers.

This must seem like a big fat “so what?” to everyone else, but it’s a huge leap forward for me. Last year our soil was so incredibly impoverished that in all my digging, all those hundreds of square feet of beds I cleared and filled and prepared, I uncovered not one earthworm. Not a single one.

Thus I am overjoyed to see these little guys returning to my little patch of earth. Slowly our soil is increasing in fertility. While I’d like the numbers to be 10x what I found today, even this small increase means I’m doing something right. Next year I hope to see even more.

Slowly, slowly. We’ll get there, Mother Nature and I.

Yay for all your hard work. I know how much this thrills you. Have you checked out your compost for more? (THAT’S where we get the most. ) Then you can spread them around to create more aerated wonderful fertile soil.
