Homegrown meal
There’s nothing quite like sitting down to a meal that came entirely from your own garden.
Tortilla española and garlic-sauteed beet greens.
Simple fare though it might be, everything was picked at the peak of freshness and flavor. The main ingredients – potatoes, eggs, greens – were actually harvested just this morning while Sofía slept. The garlic and onion were harvested a week or two ago, and the bacon in the greens – while not homegrown – was smoked and seasoned right here.
Since my main goal in starting this whole farm proposition was to see how fully we could distance ourselves from commercial market dependency, evenings like this (and breakfasts like this one) feel pretty darn good. Not fancy, but so satisfying.

Looks delicious. Food doesn’t have to be fancy to be great.

I would love to know the process you use to make your bacon. My husband has been saying that we should make our own.

Hey Melissa – long story short, you cure the bacon in spices and salts in the fridge for about a week, and then smoke it while trying to not let the temperature get too much above 160. Here’s a couple blog posts with more details though, in case you’re interested!
