Bookshelf plans

Work on the new bookshelves starts on Tuesday, so I spent all morning designing the final layout.

Thank goodness for tracing paper. It makes things very easy for the scale-disinclined.

I came up with two final layouts.

One, where the crown moulding continues straight across the front of the shelves, linking the two cases on either side.

The main problem with this is that where the shelf spans the window it will be 13″ deep. If it’s only 7″ high (not 5 like I wrote), or 11″ including the crown moulding, that makes for something of a problem with proportion, doesn’t it? I worry it might look like a unibrow.

The second plan, that I think I like better, is to recess that upper shelf a bit. Maybe make it only 8″ deep.

That way the visual unification is still achieved, and it may also solve the unibrow problem. We’ll have to see.

Of course the divisions would be present in both layouts, I just hadn’t put them into the first one yet. The lower divisions would house three sets of 12 x 12 doors … or they will if I did my measurements right! -laugh-

And oh, here’s another question: How many divisions? Three (above) seems less cluttered, but four (below) would match the existing window better.

Thoughts?

I like what’s behind curtain #2- the recessed upper shelf. It would be much easier to reach into while standing on the window seat, and it would feel less “looming over one’s head” while sitting or lounging.
Hm. As far as divisions…. I sorta’ like the three…. I think. Maybe. I’ll leave that one up to you. *wink* Tracing paper rocks!

Thanks Amber! Me too! At least we don’t have to decide on the number of divisions until the very last minute. :)
