Yummy, yummy waste fry oil

My role models, the Dervaes family , have done it again.

In case you aren’t familiar with them, they are a family that took their 1/5 acre lot in Pasadena, California, and turned it into a mini-farm… literally, an urban homestead. (I’ve been labelling my own products with “from the Urban Homestead”, but they put me to shame). Their gorgeous organic fruit and vegetable garden produces nearly all of the food 6 people need, supplemented with milk from their goats and eggs from their ducks and hens. They have figured out the use of alternative energies – including a solar oven, bicycle-powered wheat grinder, and hand-cranked blender – such that they pay only $20/month in electricity.

Now they’ve gone one step farther, and have manufactured their own biodiesel using recycled vegetable oil (available for free as a waste product from any restaurant with a deep fryer), lye, and methanol. Watch the newsbyte here. Looks pretty easy to me: I wish I had a diesel-powered vehicle.

hi diana – i just discovered your blog via PTF. you’ve been blogging for a long time, huh?

I too am a member of the dervaes fan club.

Fairly easy, yes, but waste oil isn’t free very many places anymore. Lots of companies buy used oil and recycle it.

And yes, diesels are nice. I loves my Cruiser. :)

    Heya Gina – what’s PTF?

Alex: -jealous-! Weren’t you going to convert your diesel to oil at some point?
