Bee-autiful

Look what I was doing today:

Learning about keeping bees!

I learned so much – we were there for about two and a half hours. I was half afraid that seeing the seething masses of bees would awaken some latent paranoia and I’d get all freaked or something, but everything was just as cool as I’d hoped. I even got to pat the bees on their backs as they walked over the comb.

I can totally do this!

I still don’t know if I’ll do top bar (long horizontal) or Langstroth (traditional updright box, pictured above) hives. I like the idea of having a honey super with queen excluder so I don’t have to disturb the brood during harvest, but I simply couldn’t budge the half-full “deep” Langstroth boxes, which bodes ill for ease of use. Even though Nathan suggested that I could get “medium” or even “shallow” boxes for home use. And besides never having to lift anything, the top bar hives have the advantage of being easily constructible at home. And not having to buy commercially-made comb base.

So even though I’m as undecided as I ever am on all the particulars, at least one thing is certain: I’m all set to order a couple hives as soon as our new house is settled.
