Hard Work.

That’s what veggie gardening is. (whoda thunk it?) I’m taking an aerobics class that meets three times a week, but at the same time I’m doing so much work getting the garden ready for the winter that I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve been to aerobics. Not really because I’m always busy, but because I’m always sore. -grin-

I’m following the guidelines laid out by the authors of How to Grow More Vegetables, hauling in wheelbarrow-loads of compost, enough to make a 2-3″ layer on top of the soil, and then double-digging the beds to break up the clay underneath. I’m glad I’m doing it – the topsoil only goes down about 6″ – but man is it ever back-breaking work!

But it’s all going to be worth it. I want to do everything I possibly can to make my soil the best it can be, because I’m hoping to supply most of our vegetables for next year – not something I can do if the plants are struggling.

Besides, by the time Christmas rolls around, I’ll have man-muscle arms I can show off to everyone. 😀
