Rutabaga!

Yes! I have secured a community garden plot with the Greenbelt Garden Club! I’m going over there at four tomorrow to see which plots are available and pick which one I like best. I can’t wait to start tilling earth again, pulling weeds, and planting seeds!

I’ve never planted a fall crop before, but I’m excited to try. I spent all evening (well, more literally two hours) on Stokes Seeds, carefully picking seed packets, trying to choose between seven different varieties of golden beets and ten of rhubarb chard, only to get to the end with my mind finally made up and my credit card at my disposal…. to find that their checkout software was broken. Ah, well, guess I’ll give ’em a call tomorrow. Their company is rated so highly (in speed of shipment and quality of their seed) that it’s worth giving them another chance to take my money.

So far I’m planting just about everything that can grow through a heavy frost, except cabbages and parsnips (which I don’t particularly like):

  • Mesclun lettuce mix
  • Turnips
  • Scallions
  • Onions
  • Broccoli
  • Beets
  • Baby carrots
  • Swiss Chard
  • Kohlrabi
  • Spinach

If I’d jumped on the opportunity when it was first offered, I would have had time to plant a lot more things for the Fall: like Brussels Sprouts, which I’ve heard are fantastic fresh (and which I’ve always loathed frozen-and-baked). I was holding out for a plot next to the walk-bridge, which I bike over twice a day. Today I decided to see just how far away these other plots really were: and lo and behold, not only were they only a couple blocks farther away, they were also neatly organized, securely deer fenced, and had full sun. Now that’s what I’d call an auspicious beginning for a soon-to-be vegetable garden.

Well, on I go in my quest for fall plantings. I think my next stop is Stark Brothers for some asparagus roots, rhubarb roots, onion and garlic sets, and perhaps some raspberry canes too… oooh, I’m getting ambitious all of a sudden! -grin-
